For a lot of us, the water we have access to in our homes is hard water. And the minerals in hard water can have a huge effect on both our skin and hair. If you can see the mineral deposits building up on your faucets and shower head, it's building up in your hair as well. The effects of hard water buildup on our hair actually closely mimic moisture overload and protein overload. Thy all cause frizz, lack of shine, lack of curl definition and volume, and can cause the hair to be more brittle, causing more breakage. Not only does it dry it out, but it also can lead to discoloration of blonde hair and even leave to thinning hair.

So what can we do about it? The best option is to install a water softener, but if your renting or can't afford it there are other options. The best alternative to a water softener is to incorporate a chelating shampoo into your routine. Most shampoos we buy at the store don't actually have ingredients in them that remove hard water buildup. In fact, hard water makes our shampoo and soap less effective. If you notice your shampoo isn't lathering as much as it used to, it could be due to hard water. But chelating shampoos have additional ingredients in them that target hard water build up and remove it, helping to restore the shine and definition to your limp hair.
