(Quarrymen 1958 meets Elvis Presley)
This is my fan mashup blending The Beatles' very first recording—"In Spite of All the Danger" (by The Quarrymen, 1958)—with Elvis Presley's "Tryin' to Get to You" (1955/1956 version).
The History
"In Spite of All the Danger" was recorded on July 12, 1958, at Percy Phillips' home studio in Liverpool.
It was the first (and only) original song featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison together on record.
The Quarrymen lineup: John (vocals/guitar), Paul (backing vocals/guitar), George (backing vocals/guitar solo), John "Duff" Lowe (piano), Colin Hanton (drums).
One acetate disc was pressed—they passed it around for a week each before it vanished until Anthology 1 in 1995 (shortened to 2:42).
Credited to McCartney-Harrison: Paul wrote the tune and lyrics, but gave George co-credit for his guitar solo (a casual deal back then—no copyrights or publishing knowledge yet).
The Elvis Connection
Paul McCartney has confirmed the song was heavily inspired by Elvis Presley.
In The Beatles Anthology, Paul calls it "a self-penned little song very influenced by Elvis."
In interviews with Mark Lewisohn (The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions and Tune In), Paul says:
"It's me doing an Elvis... I'm a bit loath to say which! ... It was one that I'd heard at scout camp when I was younger and I'd loved it."
Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn notes the melody leans heavily on Elvis's "Tryin' to Get to You," which includes the similar line: "[in] spite of all that I've been through."
Musicologist Walter Everett agrees the cadence comes close, and it's widely seen as the direct model.
My Mashup Process
I combined elements from both versions:
Used all instruments from the Beatles' raw 1958 recording and Elvis's classic track.
Lowered the pitch and slowed down the Elvis version to match the Beatles' tempo/key—making the instruments layer perfectly.
Guitar solo starts with George alone for a few measures, then both solos play simultaneously—they fit amazingly!
Alternated vocals for flow: e.g., Beatles chorus ("I'll do anything for you, anything you want me to"), then Elvis ("Baby, tryin' to get to you"), back to Beatles with the "ah" backups.
Lyrics still make sense in conversation—heartache, devotion, and perseverance across eras.
A loving tribute to early rock 'n' roll roots: Elvis inspiring the boys who became The Beatles.
Thanks for listening! Peace & love. ✌️🎸
Fair use note: Transformative fan project using archival material for tribute/educational purposes.
