"The War of the Tignon Ties from the Beauty of Bondage to Freedom" captures the obsessive oppression of Free women of color, enslaved African and Creole woman who were expected to conform to a particular dress in style in an effort to restrict social status and make them distinguishable from white women suppressing any perceived threat to the social hierarchy limiting their ability to express themselves through fashion.
Spanish Governor of Louisiana Territory Esteban Rodriguez Miro's Code Noir or Black Code Laws of 1724, restricted all women of color freed or enslaved from wearing their hair elaborately so what is known as a tignon became mandatory. Often the tignon became a form of resistance by creatively styling the headwraps with elaborate fabrics and embellishments, turning it into a symbol of defiance and cultural expression!
Lola would soon understand that though labeled a free woman of color, free hardly meant free! She discovered that the implementation of social stratification literally meant every part of her being would forever be in bondage and the chains of slavery was a metaphor symbolizing the physical and psychological constraints of slavery, oppression, and violence. They represented the complex circumstances that make escape nearly impossible! The bonds of slavery seemed unbreakable.
Inevitably, the low self-esteem of these women to include Lola became the driving force for rebellion.....How far was Lola willing to go to obtain solace???/
