Local musician and Appalachian State Hayes School of Music instructor Andy Page has put together a special one-off concert with two world-renowned jazz musicians who are visiting the High Country for the holidays.
Happening on the day after Christmas, Page will be leading the quartet, which will include guitarist Ben Sher, bassist Steve LaSpina, and drummer and former App State professor Rick Dilling.
Andy Page and Friends will perform at the Lost Province Brewing Company on Friday, Dec. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. The show is free, and the brewery and restaurant are located at 130 N. Depot Street in downtown Boone.
Ben Sher has been teaching the guitar at the prestigious Berklee College of Music for over 25 years. He is an instructor in American and Brazilian jazz styles, teaching students on electric and acoustic guitar. As for his performance schedule, Sher’s Brazilian Jazz group Tudo Bem has performed at the well-known jazz clubs in New York City as well as in jazz venues in Europe and in Russia.
Bassist Steve LaSpina has taught music at William Paterson University, New York University, and The College of St. Rose over the years. As a working musician, LaSpina has performed and recorded with an array of legendary musicians over the years, ranging from the jazz saxophone greats Stan Getz, Phil Woods and Benny Carter to acclaimed artists such as Pat Martino, Clark Terry, Randy Brecker, Chet Baker and many others. One of the great jazz guitarists of all time was Jim Hall and LaSpina played bass with him for six years before Hall passed away in 2013.
“I met Ben Sher at Lost Province a while ago,” said Andy Page. “He was just there, and I recognized him, and I was like, ‘Excuse me, are you Ben Sher?’ And, he said, ‘Yes, I am.’ I believe he has some friends that live in this area. So, he contacted me a while ago and said, ‘Hey, I’m coming down there to North Carolina, do you want to get together and play some music?’ I said, ‘Well, actually, I am scheduled to do a gig on the day after Christmas if you’re interested.’ As for Steve LeSpina, he lives in Asheville after living and playing in places like New York for 40 years, and I have played with him before. So, I reached out to Steve as well, and when I told Ben that I had a bass player lined up for this show and it was Steve Lespina, he said, ‘Whoa, nice.’ I’ve never played with Steve, even though we have traveled in the same jazz circles for decades.”
When the idea was hatched to expand the trio into a proper quartet by adding a drummer, Page knew who to call.
“I thought it was going to be a trio, and then the folks at Lost Province said they would be cool with a quartet, and that is when I reached out to drummer Rick Dilling,” said Page. “Rick was an instructor at Appalachian State, and he’ll be driving in from Hendersonville, NC, where he is the general manager and teacher at The Music Center. I’m excited about it.”
With this being a one-off show, it will be fascinating to see four accomplished musicians combine their talents and draw on years of experience to create wonderful jams without much rehearsal.
“We’re going to stick with playing some jazz standards,” said Page. “I mean, I wouldn’t call out a tune that was super obscure just to be difficult, yet I also know that if there’s any jazz standards that I could come up with and suggest to play, they would know it. They are that good. So, we are going to play tunes that everyone knows and then just swing it, and that will be fun.”
