Welcome to the demonstration of Underground Cable Fault Distance Locator using Arduino! ⚡️📍
Finding the exact location of a short circuit in underground cables is a major challenge for electrical workers. Digging up the entire line is expensive and time-consuming. This project solves that problem by using an Arduino microcontroller to detect the specific phase having the fault (R, Y, or B) and calculating the exact distance of the fault from the base station in meters/kilometers.
🔧 How It Works: This system works on the principle of Ohm's Law and resistivity.
Cable Simulation: We use a series of resistors to simulate the internal resistance of long underground cables.
Fault Creation: Switches (SW1, SW2, etc.) are used to manually create "short circuit" faults between phases at specific known distances.
Detection: When a fault switch is pressed, the current flows through a shorter path, changing the resistance.
Calculation: The Arduino detects the voltage drop across the loop, converts it into a distance value using the code logic, and displays it on the 16x2 LCD screen.
🛠️ Hardware Components Used:
Microcontroller: Arduino UNO
Display: 16x2 LCD Display
Power Supply: 12V Transformer & Rectifier Circuit (Bridge Rectifier)
Switching: 5V Relay Module
Simulation: Push Buttons/Switches (to simulate faults)
Resistance: Resistors (1kΩ, 10kΩ, etc. - simulating cable length)
Connecting Wires & PCB Board

Displays exact distance (e.g., 2144 meters) on the LCD.
Low cost and highly efficient for urban areas.
🎓 Application: This is an excellent Final Year Project for Electrical (EEE) and Electronics (ECE) engineering students. It demonstrates knowledge of embedded systems, circuit theory (Ohm’s law), and practical problem-solving.
