Ona Judge (Virginia, 1799): The Girl Who Escaped George Washington

Автор: Dark Plantation Stories

Описание: In 1796, Ona Judge was enslaved in the household of George and Martha Washington. Raised at Mount Vernon and later serving inside the presidential mansion in Philadelphia, she witnessed the contradiction between liberty and bondage up close. When she learned she would be given away as a wedding gift, she made a decision that could cost her life. She escaped.

For years, the most powerful man in America attempted to recapture her. Agents were sent. Letters were written. Rewards were offered. But Ona refused to return unless guaranteed her freedom — a condition that was denied.

She chose poverty over bondage. She chose uncertainty over comfort. And she never went back.
