Consumer Product Biocompatibility Testing

Описание: Products such as wearables (wearable technology/devices) including smart watches, virtual reality devices, and augmented reality glasses are examples of consumer products that come into direct contact with a user. These products are composed of a base material, in addition to various additives such as plasticizers, UV stabilizers, pigments or antimicrobials. The choices made in materials of construction leads to concerns about chemical exposure and raises the question, “How safe are these devices for the consumer?”

Biocompatibility studies can be utilized to characterize chemical components that have the potential to migrate out of a product. Studies, when designed around a specific device and its use, provide an accurate picture of what chemicals the end user is exposed to. This type of study can be performed at various stages of product development including raw materials procurement, early product design, manufacturing samples and retail merchandise. Biocompatibility can be assessed through comprehensive composition extractable/leachable studies. These studies characterize leachable components of a product and will identify compounds of concern that can be evaluated for toxicological risk to the consumer. Should hazardous substances be identified, targeted analysis can be performed.
