The judge had given him three months to "establish appropriate housing." That deadline was now 72 hours away.
They drove north through rain that hammered the windshield like accusations. Emma sat quiet in the passenger seat, her backpack clutched to her chest containing everything she'd packed: clothes, books, her dead grandmother's locket, and the family photo Marcus knew she still cried over.
"Is Mom's lawyer going to take me away?" she asked as they passed mile marker 127.
Marcus's hands tightened on the steering wheel. "Not if I can help it, sweetheart."
"Tony's mom said you should just give up. That Mom can give me a better life."
The words hit like a fist. Tony's mom was Jennifer's best friend, had been feeding Emma poison for months.
"What do you think?" Marcus asked quietly.
Emma was silent for a long moment. "I think Mom has a nicer house. But you have a nicer heart."
Marcus had to pull over. He sat on the shoulder with hazards blinking, rain streaming down the windows, and let himself cry while his daughter held his hand.
"We're going to be okay," she whispered, echoing words he'd told her a thousand times. "We always figure it out."
By the time they reached the coordinates, night had fallen. The cabin sat at the end of a dirt road that hadn't seen maintenance in years, surrounded by towering pines that blocked most of the moonlight.
"This is it?" Emma's voice was small.
It looked worse than Marcus had feared. The cabin was dark, silent, listing slightly to one side. The porch sagged. One window was cracked. The whole structure seemed to be held together by optimism and rot.
But it had a roof. And it was theirs. For now.
