Each movement of this suite depicts a different region and musical style of Spain. included are many guitar idioms derived from Spain's folk music. This incorporation of folk music marks an important trend towards musical nationalism.
Although originally composed for the piano, Suite Española has become a staple of guitar literature. The pieces within the suite were written independently during 1886, and later grouped together to form the suite in 1887 in honor of the Queen of Spain. However, Asturias was not in the original grouping in 1887, but was instead included in a revised publication of the suite in 1912.
Originally Asturias was a prelude to Chants d'Espagne. This prelude combines elements of Andalusian Flamenco music with a toccata-like pedal point texture. Interestingly, as with other works added to the suite in 1912, the title and musical styles do not correlate geographically, as the Andalusian Flamenco style is not found in the Asturias region.
Sean Mulholland is a student of Christopher Ladd.
He plays a guitar made by Alan H Chapman.
