These days, complex lab processes can be engineered into simple devices such as this lab-on-a-chip.
Microfluidics is a new field in which tiny amounts of fluid are processed for healthcare diagnostics.
Microfluidic devices are like the electronic chips found in your computer, but they use microscopic channels instead of wires to process fluids instead of electricity.
The trouble with most microfluidic devices is they're expensive, difficult to manufacture and unreliable. You can't market them if they cost $1000 each and a large proportion fail during use.
Ryan Pawell manufactures devices using thermoplastic materials or plastic. The goal is to get the cost down to $1 while maintaining quality.
