A lot of wild fan theories exist about the crystal gems and the concept of fusion. The series creator, Rebecca Sugar, did confirm at Comic Con that Fluorite is a polyamorous character in the show. So I got to thinking, "what's with all these other multi gem fusions?" If Garnet is always a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire, then does it make her polyamorous to then fuse with anyone else? If Pearl gets jealous or competitive about Garnet fusing with Amethyst, do we still call that a strictly platonic bond? Steven fusing with his crush Connie, or Rose Quartz "fusing" with Greg even though that's not supposed to be possible, also push the limits of what the show itself defines relationships to be. Today, I make the case for relationship anarchy in the Steven Universe series and movie.
