What is the fundamental "signature" of a system? 🤔 In this animation, we explore the concept of the Impulse Response, the basis of system identification in engineering and physics.
We demonstrate what happens when a system (represented by its natural response, h[n], a damped sine wave) is excited by a perfect unit impulse (δ[n]), simulating an instantaneous "hammer strike" or "shock".
Through convolution, the impulse "travels through" the system, and the output (y[n]) traces an exact copy of the original impulse response. This visually proves the identity property of convolution: δ[n] * h[n] = h[n].
Understanding a system's impulse response allows us to predict how it will react to ANY other input signal! It is a cornerstone of vibration analysis, acoustics, and control theory.
This project was developed as a visualization tool for teaching concepts in Signals and Systems and Control Engineering.
