F4 is not just a key for inserting dollar signs in formulas, it also has the power to repeat the last action you performed. For example, if you need to delete multiple columns, you can simply press F4 after deleting the first column to repeat the action for the remaining columns. This can save you time and keystrokes, especially when performing repetitive tasks.

But F4's true power lies in its ability to create absolute references in formulas. By pressing F4 after selecting a cell reference, you can lock it down to a specific row or column, ensuring that it does not change when the formula is copied. This is especially useful when working with large datasets and complex formulas.

When building a rectangular range, F4 works perfectly when using the mouse or arrow keys. However, if you are typing the formula, F4 will only lock the second part of the reference. In this case, you can go back into Edit mode with F2 and select the entire range or just the colon to add the necessary dollar signs.

There are four types of absolute references with two $ locks - both the row and column, just the column, just the row, and no locks at all. By pressing F4 multiple times, you can toggle between these different types of references. This is a handy trick to know when working with complex formulas.

select the next cell and press F4
