The Psychology of Screams

His collection of sounds, taken from movies and YouTube videos, includes classic performances by Hollywood "scream queens" along with the screams of non-actors reacting to actual events. Study participants come to his "scream lab" and listen to the recordings, without any visual cues for context. The human brain appears highly attuned to distinguishing whether a scream comes from someone happy, frightened, angry or in pain. Long before we had language, we had screams, Gouzoules says.
