On 18th November 1962, the Chinese army, after attacking Daulat Beg Oldi area of Ladakh, attacked Gurung Hill. The region was being manned by 2 Indian companies of 18 Gorkha Rifles under the command of Capt P.L. Kher. The Chinese’s constant attacks forced the Indian army to step back. But they kept the counter-attack going. With the help of Second Lieutenant SD Goswami’s fierce courage and support the battle turned in India’s favour. On 21st November 1962, a ceasefire was declared and the Chinese soldiers were forced to retreat.
This is the story of such patriotism and bravery that turned the battle of Gurung around.
