Polling stations closed at 8 p.m., but protests broke out several hours earlier. Protesters marched to parliament and then to the presidential palace. They demanded the overthrow of the current government and the release of political prisoners who were arrested after last year's protests. In the end, the protesters knocked down a fence and tried to enter the courtyard of the residence. Clashes began, with special forces using tear gas and water cannons. There were casualties and arrests. President Salome Zurabishvili considers the protesters' actions to be a provocation staged by the current regime to discredit the peaceful protests that have been going on in Georgia for over 300 days.
