During the final day of my visit to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in October of 2022, an extra train left Durango once the Silverton and Cascade trains departed for the day. This extra train was a test run featuring K37 2-8-2 “Mikado” #493 at the head end, with DL535E #101 providing braking and weight, as well as two passenger cars, and was intended to operate from Durango all the way to Silverton. Unfortunately, problems arose in Silverton with K36 #480, which led to a decision to only operate the test run as far as Elk Park. After the Silverton passed the test train in Elk Park, the 493 followed south to avoid potentially congesting the line. This video offers a few short scenes along the valley section of the Durango & Silverton as #493 makes its way back to Durango.
