Oliver & Company is a gritty, modern-day reimagining of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.
It was one of the first Disney films to rely heavily on celebrity star power. Highlight Billy Joel as Dodger, Bette Midler as the pampered poodle Georgette, and Cheech Marin as the energetic Tito.
The movie is a time capsule of 1980s New York City. It features actual brand names for realism (like Coca-Cola and Sony) which was a first for a Disney animated film.
Oliver & Company was the first Disney film to have a dedicated Computer Animation Department. They used computers to animate complex objects like Fagin’s scooter and Sykes’ limousine.
Dog’s-Eye View: To get the perspective right, layout artists photographed New York streets with cameras just 18 inches off the ground.
The Twin Towers: It is one of the few animated films to prominently feature the World Trade Center. Disney chose not to edit them out for later releases to preserve the film’s historical portrayal of NYC.
Oliver & Company takes place in 1980s New York City, an orphaned kitten named Oliver joins a gang of street-wise dogs led by the cool Dodger (Billy Joel). Their owner, a petty thief named Fagin, is in deep debt to the ruthless loan shark Sykes.
