The piano music of Venezuelan composer Moisés Moleiro is often closer to the tradition of Western art music than to the national tradition. Many of his pieces are reminiscent of Scarlatti, Bach, Chopin and the impressionists, but always bear the mark of his personal style. Moleiro devoted himself to the advancement of national music throughout his life; he was a founding member of the Escuela Nacionalista Musical and taught for many years at the Escuela de Música y Declamación. Joropo, written in 1944, is perhaps his most well-known composition. The Joropo evolved from an amalgamation of various Spanish dance styles such as the Fandango and the Malagueña, the music of African slaves and from the music of the indigenous population of South America. The Joropo is a cheerful dance from Venezuela; its playful rhythms are similar to those of the Mexican Jarabe. The music of Latin America tends to be lighthearted, but there is always a hint of melancholy, too.
