Learn to develop stability and clarity of mind with the simple approach of silent illumination sitting meditation.
Sit mindfully with a stable posture, relax step-by-step, then just mind yourself sitting. It's simple, but takes practice.
This method of sitting meditation comes from the Chan/Zen Buddhist tradition, and is a form of non-analytical meditation. It's a simple way to relax physically and mentally and directly experience yourself sitting--with no complicated forms of visualization or contemplation. Known as "silent illumination" (mozhao in Chinese, 默照), this approach is a way to develop your natural capacity to be aware--a way of being that is free and at ease.
I learned this approach to meditation from my teacher, Chan Master Sheng Yen (聖嚴法師), founder of the Dharma Drum Lineage of Chan Buddhism.
You can sit on a meditation cushion, or you can sit on a chair, at first in a relatively quiet place. Eventually you can use this method anywhere and at anytime, to bring your mind back to your present moment experience. With a stable awareness, you can peacefully and skillfully deal with life's challenges in a compassionate way.
The meditation ends with the sound of a chime.
