JIM WHITE ON A MAJOR DAMN NETWORK TV SHOW
Oh, the labyrinth story that accompanies this particular episode in my so-called career. I’d just been banned from Conan after I put my hat on Conan’s head on live TV when he came over to shake hands. I guess it takes about a calendar year to get his hair vertical like that and I messed his coiffure up pretty good when I spontaneously stuck my sweaty hat on him.
So I’d been warned to not fuck up on Letterman, but you know how that goes. Paul Schaeffer bailed me out after I started the song wrong and we had to restart, and even then Dave let me sit in the celebrity chair. I was told not to say anything, as I was not mic’ed up. During the commercial break Dave was real sweet, a genuine type person. When I told him how few records I’d sold he frowned and said “Well we’ll have to do something about that!” Then when he came back on air he was making a nice pitch for the record when I did what I always do, and had a slight Turrets moment. That was my last appearance on a major damn network TV show. Live and learn.
