It has been over a month since Ugandans went to the polls on January 14, 2026, in a tense and closely watched general election that will determine the country’s leadership from 2026 to 2031. While winners prepare to take office and losers reflect or challenge results in court, for some political actors, the post-election season has been about something else entirely — freedom.
This video takes an in-depth look at the case of Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba, Western Region Vice President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who reportedly went missing on the eve of the election. According to her family and party officials, she was allegedly abducted by armed operatives in uniforms resembling those of the Uganda People’s Defence Force from a hotel in Muhanga Town, Rukiga District, and driven away in a Toyota Hiace, commonly known in Uganda as a “drone.”
For weeks, her whereabouts were unknown. She was later produced before the Kabale Chief Magistrate’s Court and charged with incitement to violence under Section 79(1) of the Penal Code Act. The prosecution alleges that between December 2025 and January 2026, she incited violence against supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in parts of Kigezi sub-region.
In this report, we break down:
• The timeline of her reported disappearance and detention
• The charges brought against her
• The arguments presented by both prosecution and defense
• The court’s decision to grant her bail
• The political implications of her case in Western Uganda
Tukamushaba, who was also contesting for the Rukiga District Woman Member of Parliament seat, was in detention on polling day and ultimately lost the race to the NRM candidate. Her supporters describe the charges as politically motivated, while state prosecutors insist it is a matter of enforcing the law.
Now released on bail under strict conditions, she awaits her next court appearance as legal proceedings continue.
As Uganda moves into the post-election period, cases like this continue to shape the national conversation around security agencies, opposition politics, and the role of the courts in electoral seasons.
Stay with Uganda Radio Network as we continue to follow this developing story and other key post-election updates across the country.
