The quiz show top prize was originally 64,000 sixpences (£1600) but this increased during 1956 to 64,000 shillings (£3200). The presenter of the show was Jerry Desmonde.
Desmonde was "straight man" to Norman Wisdom in some of his films. He committed suicide in 1967 after a row with a business partner.
The $64,000 Question, which is based on an American format that was very popular in the 1950s.
