Populism is on the rise across Europe. In this episode of Governance This Week we explore the root causes of populism, the main differences between populist and traditional parties, and how the latter can react to the success of the former.
Our guest is Professor Tommaso Nannicini, Chair in Political Economy at the Florence School of Transnational Governance. Professor Nannicini has not only extensively researched populism, he is also a former chief economic adviser to the Italian PM, former Under Secretary, and former Senator. In this episode, he explains how he set up a randomised controlled trial to see how traditional parties can respond to populist parties on issues that are particularly fitting for populist messages.
