Canon Powershot V1 10Bit 4K Cinematic (Shot it in Bangkok Thailand)
It’s here, we finally get to see a true video-centric point and shoot camera from Canon. The V series. This V series is basically a Sony ZV Series. But this camera shoots 10Bit 4K upto 60p. And it has C-log 3 picture profile. This is new for Canon entry level camera. Although the camera has a 1.5x crop on 10Bit 4K 60p. But for the price of USD$649. I sort of accept that.
The reason why I went with the V1 over the R50V. It is the lens. Canon V1 comes with a 16-50mm IS. And this is a huge deal, because there isn’t a 16-50mm equivalent lens on R50V. The closest focal length you could get is the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 (16-30mm). But there is no Lens IS or IBIS. Plus the lens is over AUD$1K. So you are adding extra cost on the R50V. And sometimes having a fixed lens camera. So you can work with the limitations. Also my R50V order didn’t come in time.
One thing I found it annoying when shooting on C-Log 3. So the native ISO of C-log 3 is ISO800. And you can’t really change the shutter speed for the 180’c rule. Also the built in ND is only 3 stops. And this camera has no filter thread. You can’t really put your own NDs. So the only way left to adjust the light is your aperture. So I realized I have stop it down to f/4.0 or f/5.6 most of the time. And when you wanna zoom in a little just to have a better framing. Your F Stop change it as well.
Overall I think this is probably one of the best point and shoot camera on the market right now. Video quality is amazing. Yes, it isn’t as compact as the Sony ZV-1 II. But having 10Bit color, 4K 60p, and lens IS are clearly a winner still. As the Sony 18-50mm lens doesn’t have lens IS. You always have to en-able the E-IS. It makes the wide end starting from 22mm. And what I would love to see in the market II is, It maybe good if we get to a faster lens in the future. Keep the 16-50mm focal length but f/2.0-f2.8 would be amazing. And no more crop in 4K 60p.
