Cattleya violacea is a bifoliate (with two leaves on each bulb) Cattleya; It hails from Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru & Ecuador.

It grows year round (no rest) and needs high light, heat and plenty of water year round but the roots must dry fast and hence, mounting is best but then, you need to water it every day.

The flower from C. violacea grows straight from a brand new bulb without sheath (unlike most other bifoliate Cattleyas).

C. violacea is not a typical bifoliate as bifoliates are often from Brazil only and they are usually much larger plants with more flowers.

Unifoliate Cattleyas have one leaf (hence their name) and they have the largest flowers of the genus but in small numbers. The colors are typically white, purple and yellows. Bifoliate Cattleyas have two leaves (and sometimes three); they have smaller flowers but many more than unifoliates. The flowers of bifoliates are often waxy with good texture and the color palette is very wide. They hate being repotted and if you do it when they don't have new roots growing, it is likely a death sentence. I mount mine which eliminates the issue of repotting.
