Liesl found this in the kitchen this morning in a humane mouse trap. You can easily distinguish between a kingsnake (banded red against black) and a highly venomous coral snake (banded red against yellow) by the colouring even though they otherwise look a lot alike. Kingsnakes make great pets and help to keep other snakes at bay. They are safe and friendly, never kill one. I relocated this little guy to a field nearby.
Remember... red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black, venom lack. Everyone in the Americas should be aware of how to identify the super safe and friendly kingsnake / milk snake family from the coral snake family.
This is one of the Central American milk snakes, related to the Pacific Central American Milksnake, Guatemalan Milk Snake and Honduran Milk snake. This snake was first identified in 1978.
