Five supertankers tied to Sinokor, the company led by Korean tycoon Ga-Hyun Chung, were hit in and near the Strait of Hormuz between August 31 and October 11. Oil tanker captains in the Gulf are being paid up to $100,000 a month to cross the strait, industry insiders and maritime unions say. On October 9, a supertanker on the Gulf-to-China run was earning about $1.41 million a day (Signal Ocean, via Riviera).
Before the war, Sinokor bought 35 of the 45 supertankers sold in 2026 up to February 19 (Argus). In July, it offered its sailors six months' extra pay for one trip of about a month. Unions say some crews are offered up to five times their normal pay. At least 24 seafarers have been killed since the war began, per the IMO.
