Lecture by William L. Coleman, Ph.D. as closing keynote of the 78th annual Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum, February 24, 2026.
Description:
From rural Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania to midcoast Maine, the multigenerational Wyeth family of artists has shared a common commitment to the material traces of the American past. Starting with patriarch artist-illustrator N.C. Wyeth in the early years of the twentieth century, and continuing through his artist children Andrew, Carolyn, and Henriette, and his grandson Jamie Wyeth, these distinct creative voices each took inspiration from a vibrant historical imagination that infused their work. To varying degrees, the Wyeth artists were aware of and inspired by the contemporaneous rise of institutions like Colonial Williamsburg and, closer to home, Winterthur, both of which had a direct impact on their own collecting and playful, rather than strictly historic preservationist, adaptive reuse of historic structures. Accordingly, the Antiques Forum is the ideal context in which to examine the ways the Wyeths have interacted with the decorative arts and historic architecture across the decades. This will culminate in the first airing of some new research for a 2026 nationally traveling exhibition that centers on the especially complex meeting of painting and historic material culture that was a throughline to the creative partnership of Andrew and Betsy Wyeth.
