After weeks of bails and "winter taxes," we finally hit the jackpot. Join Pemi and I with a group of 19 other hikers as we take on the most remote peaks in the White Mountains: Zealand, West Bond, Mount Bond, and Bondcliff. This 18-mile mission was a test of endurance and gear—so much so that the cold actually claimed my cameras before we finished the descent!
This trip felt like the official "redemption" of our winter season. We started with a six-mile night hike into the Zealand Hut, where we spent a quiet Friday night preparing for the massive day ahead.
On Saturday morning, we joined a group of 20 strong hikers to tackle the "Crown Jewels" of the Pemi Wilderness. The conditions were classic winter alpine—rime ice, blowing snow, and glimpses of the "Catwalk" on Bondcliff through the fog and clouds.
The Challenge: Winter hiking is a game of margins. By the time we hit the Lincoln Woods Trail for the long walk out, the sub-freezing temperatures had fully drained both my iPhone and my Osmo Action. You'll see my "backyard closer" at the end of the video where I explain the gear failure and recap the final miles of this epic 18-mile day.
The Stats:
Peaks: Zealand (#20), West Bond (#21), Mt. Bond (#22), Bondcliff (#23)
Distance: ~18 Miles
Winter 48 Progress: 23 of 48
Conditions: Deep winter alpine, high winds, failing electronics.
