Chuikov’s “Hug the Enemy” Strategy Explained. When German bombs reduced Stalingrad to rubble in 1942, Soviet General Chuikov saw an opportunity. He told his troops to “hug the enemy” — fight so close that German artillery couldn’t be used without hitting their own men. In the ruins, Chuikov formed storm groups of 6–8 men armed with grenades and submachine guns. These teams stormed buildings room by room, turning basements and sewers into battle zones. Soviet snipers ruled the streets, tanks became useless, and every building became a fortress. By November, Germany’s elite 6th Army was crushed and the tactics born in Stalingrad changed urban warfare forever.
