And the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964 and, at the time, was the longest suspension bridge in the world outside the United States.[6][7] The bridge connects Edinburgh to Fife; replacing a centuries-old ferry service to carry vehicular traffic, cyclists and pedestrians across the Forth.

Wind shielding has been built into the design, to enable use of the bridge in high winds, which often led to restrictions on the old bridge.[
