I finally tried the Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints from Japan… and they were not what I expected! I’d heard they were creamy and opaque, but mine turned out much more watery and transparent. So in this video I’m testing them out, swatching the colours, and sketching a few loose flowers to see what they can really do.
The colours themselves are absolutely gorgeous — rich, vibrant, and so satisfying — but I’m still figuring out how to get the best out of them. This is very much a first‑impressions, playful exploration rather than a polished tutorial, so come along for the experiment!
If you’ve used Gansai Tambi before, I’d love to hear your tips. Do you treat them like watercolour? Gouache? Something in between?
