When it comes to American history, there are thousands of names students learn. From George Washington and other colonists who won the young nation's freedom from England, to civil rights pioneers like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., students learn about some of the most influential figures in American history.
But one they may not know is Robert Smalls. The man who was born a slave in Beaufort, South Carolina, became a hero during the Civil War by helping fellow slaves escape the Confederacy by taking over a gunship. He then became the first Black Navy commander in American history and was a politician during reconstruction.
While working as a politician, Smalls wrote legislation that created the first free and compulsory public school system in South Carolina. It was the first of its kind in the entire United States.
In this video, WCNC Charlotte's Richard DeVayne shares some of Robert Smalls' life as we look back at one of the greatest figures in American history. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory
