Filmed entirely on location in Holland and Belgium, this beautifully shot American drama film was directed by James B. Clark Jr. (1908-2000) and based on the 1872 novel of the same name by Maria Louise Ramé (1839-1908). With stunning cinematography by Otto Heller (1896-1970), the film stars David Ladd, Monique Ahrens, Siobhan Taylor, veteran actor Donald Crisp (1882-1974), Gijsbert Tersteeg (1905-1985), John Soer (1906-1979), Lo van Hensbergen (1917-1987), Matthieu van Eysden (1896-1970), Max Croiset (1912-1993), Theodore Bikel (1924-2015), and Spike the dog, best known as Disney's Old Yeller (1957). Family entertainment at its best, this heartwarming entry is now a sadly forgotten classic.
In a rural village outside Antwerp in nineteenth century Belgium, young Nello Dass (David Ladd) lives with his infirm grandfather Jehan (Donald Crisp). The boy's parents are dead and the two are extremely poor. Renting a small house, they manage to eke a living by delivering milk into the city. Nello dreams of becoming a great artist whilst Jehan plans having the boy work for the miller Cogez (Max Croiset). Unfortunately, their poverty prevents their ambitions. Their routine is broken when they nurse back to health an abused dog they find by the side of the road. They name him Patrasche and he becomes a ray of hope for Nello, who is now able to satisfy his interest in art by befriending a painter (Theodore Bikel), who encourages the lad to enter a drawing contest. The prize money would help him and his grandfather greatly. However, several obstacles soon confront Nello when his grandfather dies, and the local milk merchants turn to others for the deliveries. Completely bereft and unable to keep up the rent, Nello and Patrasche are evicted by an uncaring landlord and the cruel former owner (John Soer) of the dog returns to claim him back...
American composers Bert Shefter and Paul Sawtell teamed together on a large number of soundtracks, and 'A Dog of Flanders was one of their rare assignments devoted to the family drama genre with a special appeal to children. Sawtell and Shefter delivered a gentle and richly textured score with a pastoral flavour. Warmly performed by the Santa Cecilia Academy Orchestra and Choir of Rome, it shows a melodic concern with a variety of themes perfectly blended together. A marvellous score from a marvellous film. In the late 1950's, Russian-born pianist and music composer Bert Shefter formed a fruitful and cost-effective partnership with Polish-born composer and violinist Paul Sawtell. The duo worked on many low-budget horror and sci-fi films such as 'Kronos (1957), 'It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), 'Return of the Fly (1959), 'The Lost World (1960), 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961), and 'Jack the Giant Killer (1962) among others. In 1965 they composed the scores for Russ Meyer's exploitation classics 'Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and 'Motorpsycho. The last score they collaborated on was for the Mexican drama film 'Emiliano Zapata (1970).
