In the 5th century, Proclus perfected the system into a vast metaphysical cathedral, aligning traditional polytheism with philosophical monism through the doctrine of the Henads and practicing daily rites and hymns that embodied Neoplatonic theology.

The final scholarch, Damascius, pushed apophatic thought beyond even the One, positing an Ineffable beyond all naming or causation. The closure of the Athenian Academy in 529 CE silenced Neoplatonism as an institution, but its ideas permeated Christian mysticism, Islamic philosophy, Jewish thought, and the Renaissance revival of Platonism. As a result, Neoplatonism survived as the subterranean metaphysical current of Western spirituality, offering one of history’s most ambitious attempts to map the path of the soul from material entanglement back to its divine source.
