The song Dunkeld Parish (sometimes called The Parish of Dunkeld) is one of those sly, irreverent pieces of Scottish folk tradition that pokes gentle fun at the sternness of the kirk. Its words can be traced to the early nineteenth century, appearing in James Maidment’s A North Country Garland (1824). From the beginning it has stood as a cheeky commentary on the strict moral tone of the parish church, imagining, instead, a community where laughter, whisky, music, and dance take precedence over sermons and solemnity.
The lyric imagines the kirk of Dunkeld transformed: the steeple is knocked down, a chimney rises in its place, and the bell tower is replaced by a whisky still. Within those stone walls, pews become tables, the pulpit becomes a stage, and villagers gather not for preaching but for song, drink, and merriment.
The verses move between humorous narrative and wry social observation. We see a kirk refashioned as tavern, with MacDonald the piper in the pulpit, the congregation raising glasses, quarrels and brawls breaking out, and eventually the whole parish spilling onto the village green for reels, Highland steps, and late-night handshakes of friendship. The final stanza carries a thoughtful note: if every kirk in Scotland embraced such social meetings, there would be no need for bells to call people to worship, for love and friendship would draw them together far better than fear of hell. Behind the humour lies a sharp reflection about religion and community, still resonant two centuries later.
In my version I have paired the lyric with a lively jig that I’ve called the Dunkeld Jig. After the satire has played out, the band drives the whole story into dance—an invitation for us all to join the villagers in their imagined revelry. The arrangement is driven by fiddle, pipes, accordion, guitar, banjo, bass, and bodhrán, capturing the ceilidh atmosphere that the lyric so vividly paints.
So let’s raise a glass, set aside the solemnity moment, and dance joyfully into the night with Dunkeld Parish.
