Golden Gai is only 6 narrow alleyways in a city of millions of street corners, but its reputation for cheery naughtiness in the evenings -- and its depiction in countless movies and series, like Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories -- makes it almost a thing of legend among tourists.
Fun fact: they don't want tourists there, and many establishments will put up signs excluding non-members, or even framing it in racist terms. "Japanese Only!" is frequently seen on doors and windows of the many izakaya (hole in the wall bars with limited seating) of the area.
If you want to witness Golden Gai without feeling a bit threatened, or at least unwanted, you can follow the other tourists with cameras during the day. In fact, you might need to follow someone, because it is easy to miss the little area. I walked by it twice.
Nothing untoward happens in this video, though. Just a daylight tour of a famous Tokyo nightlife area.
