STORYLINE:
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to break up an anti-government protest in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, injuring scores of people, witnesses and news reports said on Wednesday.
The protest was called by the main opposition group, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to demonstrate against police shootings at activists during a series of nationwide general strikes this week.
Members of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest Islamic party, also joined the protest.
The strikes were called after a special tribunal sentenced a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami to death for alleged atrocities during the country's 1971 independence war.
Since last Thursday, when Delwar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced, at least 61 people have died in clashes, mainly between police and Jamaat-e-Islami activists across the country.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Joint Secretary General of the BNP, said the rally had been a peaceful affair until police started to fire at activists.
"But first, suddenly you know, the government law and order personnel, they attacked our rally and they fired tear gas shells and other guns and they used the firearms," Ahmed said.
However, his claim was countered by a police official.
"They started throwing cocktails (petrol bombs) and explosives at police persons and started throwing also some stones as well, and just considering all the situation, police were bound to use shotguns, use rubber bullets," said Mehedi Hasan, Additional Deputy Commissioner for Motijheel Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Jamaat-e-Islami campaigned against the creation of Bangladesh during a nine-month independence war with Pakistan 42 years ago, but denies any involvement in war crimes.
The government says three (m) million people died, 200-thousand women were raped, and millions were forced to flee to neighbouring India during the war.
It initiated the war crimes trials in 2010.
