The US State Department has expanded its visa bond pilot program, requiring nationals from 38 countries—including Nigeria—to post bonds of $5,000 to $15,000 for B1/B2 tourist and business visas starting January 21, 2026.
This financial guarantee aims to reduce overstays but does not guarantee visa approval. Bonds are refundable only if travelers comply fully or don't enter the US.
Nigeria is among 24 African nations affected, joining countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Bangladesh.
