This restored Dronescapes video presents a rare, original U.S. Air Force training film detailing the flight characteristics and operation of the F-4E Phantom II equipped with leading-edge wing slats. This educational film provides invaluable insights into how this crucial modification transformed the legendary fighter's maneuverability and handling, especially during high angle-of-attack combat situations.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was the workhorse fighter for the USAF, Navy, and Marines during the Vietnam War. While incredibly powerful and versatile, combat experience revealed limitations in its close-in dogfighting agility compared to smaller, nimbler adversaries like the MiG-17 and MiG-21. Pilots needed better handling at the edge of the flight envelope, particularly during high-G turns where the original F-4 wing could suffer from adverse yaw or stalls.
The solution, implemented on later blocks of the F-4E variant (and retrofitted to many earlier ones), was the addition of maneuvering slats to the leading edge of the wings. These slats automatically extended at high angles of attack, smoothing airflow over the wing and dramatically improving stability and control during tight turns. This modification was a direct result of lessons learned in combat and significantly enhanced the Phantom's dogfighting prowess.
This restored historical training film was created by the USAF to educate its pilots on how to get the most out of the newly slatted F-4E. It explains the aerodynamic principles behind the slats, demonstrates their effect on aircraft handling, and provides guidance on optimal maneuvering techniques. Witness the difference these slats made, turning the powerful "Rhino" into a more agile predator. This is a unique look inside the official training for one of the Cold War's most iconic fighters.
General Information: F-4E Phantom II (with Slats)
Role: Multi-role Fighter / Fighter-Bomber
Manufacturer: McDonnell Douglas
First Flight (F-4E): August 7, 1965
Slatted Wing Introduction: Implemented on F-4E Block 48 aircraft (from 1972) and retrofitted to many earlier F-4Es.
Primary Users: U.S. Air Force and numerous export customers.
Crew: 2 (Pilot, Weapon Systems Officer - WSO)
Dimensions:
Length: 63 ft 0 in (19.2 m)
Wingspan: 38 ft 5 in (11.7 m)
Powerplant: 2 × General Electric J79-GE-17A afterburning turbojet engines, 17,900 lbf (79.6 kN) thrust each with afterburner.
Maximum Speed: Mach 2.23 (1,473 mph, 2,370 km/h) at 40,000 ft (12,190 m).
Armament:
Guns: 1 × 20 mm M61A1 Vulcan rotary cannon internally mounted.
Ordnance: Up to 18,650 lbs (8,480 kg) on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles (Sparrow, Sidewinder), air-to-ground missiles, bombs (guided and unguided), rockets, and external fuel tanks.
Slatted Wing Significance: The addition of maneuvering slats (officially called Leading Edge Flaps or LEFs, but commonly referred to as slats) significantly improved the F-4E's handling qualities at high angles of attack and low speeds. This reduced the risk of spins during dogfights and allowed pilots to pull tighter turns, making the aircraft much more competitive in close-in combat scenarios encountered over Vietnam and later conflicts.
