Tricks Upon Travellers started in the early 1990s as a punk folk hybrid. Described by Langford as "politically aware", the band wrote their own original material. TUT achieved critical and financial success with their first three CDs; "Cilla Taped", "The Last Fish Supper", and "Where the Skeletons Dance". Mark Knight joined in the mid 90s on electric violin and the band played in pubs and festivals for about 5 years, earning praise and a spot at Glastonbury in 2000.

One constant for Tricks Upon Travellers was their dedication to entertaining their audience, ensuring that every performance was an engaging experience.

Graeme Hobbs and Mark Knight left the band in 2001. With Langford, Matt and Stevens being the only original members left, with Matt's wife (Sam Szul) on accordion and a new violin player (Tim Cotterall), the band was rebooted as "Tricks Upon Travellers 2". TUT2 released a CD, titled "From Another Plaice". This release marked a departure from their previous "in yer face" style, switching to a more acoustic and darker musical and lyrical direction. This reboot folded in 2003.
