The Menominee, also known as the Menominee People or Menomini, are a federally recognized tribe of Native Americans. They are formally known as the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. The name "Menominee" is derived from the Ojibwe language phrase for "Wild Rice People" and in the Menominee language, they refer to themselves as Mamaceqtaw, meaning "the people". The Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin serves as its territorial foundation. Their ancestral land once included around 10 million acres (40,000 km2) in what is now Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The tribe presently consists of around 8,700 people.
