Smt. H.R.Leelavathi blessed with a mellifluous voice and immaculate diction, is the tallest figure in Kannada Sugama Sangeetha, and a household name in Karnataka today. This legendary singer, music composer, and poet started her career in 1950, when Sugama Sangeetha was in a nascent form. She is a household name for decades, with her melodious voice flowing through Akashavani sound waves, mesmerizing generations of music lovers.
Greatest of modern day Kannada poets, including Jnanpeeth award winners Kuvempu and Bendre have commented on how her voice made them popular.
She has set to tune thousands of songs written by several poets and popularized the music form. Additionally, she is a writer and has more than 15 books to her credit. She has also been teaching music since 1956, and perhaps has produced more students than anyone else in Kannada Sugama Sangeetha.
During her tenure as the President of Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy she was instrumental in making sure different music and dance art forms reached remote parts of Karnataka.
She has received many awards. Some of the notable ones are;
Santha Shishunala Sharief Award (1997). Highest award given by Government of Karnataka for excellence in Sugama Sangeetha
Rajyotsava Award (1992). Highest award given by Government of Karnataka across all fields
Karnataka Kala Tilaka (1981). First recipient of the award for Sugama Sangeetha from Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy
Kannada Sahitya Parishath Award, Bangalore (1970). Received on the occasion of golden jubilee celebrations
