Portal was a series of three sets released from 1997 to 1999 designed to be an easier, introductory set for new players with simplified mechanics. This experiment proved to be an overall failure for a number of reasons. However, it was an interesting take on the game that not only taught Wizards a lot about designing beginner products, but also led to a lot of mistakes and just all around weird cards that are too different to ignore. So today, we’re going to be taking a trip back into one of Wizard’s first attempts to get new players interested in the game and why it wasn’t quite what the game needed.
