Cascade and Discover are two prominent "free spell" mechanics in Magic: The Gathering, often compared due to their similar core function: revealing cards from your library until you find a castable spell. However, they have crucial differences that impact deckbuilding and gameplay, especially in MTG Arena.
Here's a breakdown of their mechanics and key distinctions:

Cascade How it works:
When you cast a spell with Cascade, its Cascade ability triggers and goes on the stack above the original spell.

As the Cascade ability resolves, you exile cards from the top of your library one by one until you exile a nonland card with a mana value strictly less than the mana value of the spell with Cascade.

You may cast that exiled card without paying its mana cost.

All other cards exiled by the Cascade ability (including lands and cards with mana values too high) are then put on the bottom of your library in a random order.

The spell you cast from Cascade resolves, and then the original spell that triggered Cascade resolves.

Key characteristics of Cascade:
Trigger condition: "When you cast this spell." This means Cascade triggers immediately upon casting the spell, even if the original spell is countered. The cascaded spell will resolve before the original spell.

Mana value restriction: The discovered card must have a mana value less than the spell with Cascade. This is a strict "less than," not "less than or equal to." This restriction is fundamental to building "Cascade" decks, as you need to ensure your desired targets are the only ones with a lower mana value in your deck.

Card destination if not cast: If you choose not to cast the discovered card, it goes to the bottom of your library along with the other exiled cards.

Design space: Traditionally, Cascade has been found on spells that are cast from hand.

Discover How it works:
Discover is a keyword action that is typically part of a triggered or activated ability (e.g., "When this creature enters the battlefield, Discover X" or "Tap: Discover Y").

When you "Discover X," you exile cards from the top of your library one by one until you exile a nonland card with a mana value less than or equal to X.

You may cast that exiled card without paying its mana cost, or you may put that card into your hand.

All other cards exiled by the Discover action are then put on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Key characteristics of Discover:
Trigger condition: Discover itself is a keyword action, not a triggered ability. It's usually part of another ability that triggers (e.g., an Enter the Battlefield trigger, or an activated ability). This means that if the ability that causes you to Discover is countered, the Discover action won't happen.

Mana value flexibility: The "X" in "Discover X" is a set number. The discovered card must have a mana value less than or equal to X. This allows for more flexibility, as a 5-mana card can discover for 5, potentially hitting another 5-mana spell.

Card destination if not cast: If you choose not to cast the discovered card, you have the option to put it into your hand. This is a significant difference, as it provides card advantage and more flexibility.

Design space: Discover can appear on a wider variety of card types and abilities, including creatures with enter-the-battlefield triggers, activated abilities, or even as part of a spell's resolution.
In MTG Arena, these differences have played a significant role in how decks are built and how powerful certain strategies become. Discover's ability to put cards into hand, and its less strict mana value requirement (less than or equal to vs. strictly less than), have often made it a more powerful and sometimes problematic mechanic in competitive formats, leading to some cards with Discover being banned or restricted.
