Zespri is the world market leader in kiwifruit. The Zespri Europe logistics hub is located in Zeebrugge. Here the kiwis are unloaded, stored, subjected to a quality control, and then packed in small consumer units. These units are then distributed directly to supermarkets in Europe.
As a company, Zespri believes very strongly in sustainability. The ambition for the future was therefore to develop a packaging solution. In cooperation with Van de Velde Packaging, a 100% sustainable cardboard packaging was composed in which no plastic was used.
Van de Velde Packaging provided Zespri with a total concept which started, of course, with the tray itself. Subsequently, an adapted machine was developed to fold the tray. Finally, the process is completed with a procedure to close the tray automatically.
The big advantage of working with Van de Velde Packaging is sustainability. In addition, a great deal of attention was paid to the development of a more efficient packaging line.
