ISRAEL: JERUSALEM: 5 KILLED IN BOMB EXPLOSION ON RUSH HOUR BUS

Five people have been killed and up to 80 injured after a bomb exploded on a rush hour bus in Jerusalem.

The Islamic militant group Hamas has claimed responsibility for the blast, believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber.

The bomb went off at the back of the bus in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Eshkol.

The dead and injured lay on the pavements after the explosion.

And rescue workers climbed through the wreckage searching for bodies.

The bomb ripped the roof off the vehicle, a double bus with space for 80 passengers.

Passengers on a second bus, passing at the time of the explosion, were also injured.

Up to 20 of the 80 or more injured are said to be seriously hurt.


The blast came a day after Israel lifted a 10-day closure of the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip.

It had been sealed because of Israeli fears that a suicide attack would be launched in Israel.

Islamic militants have claimed responsibility for a series of previous explosions that have killed scores of Israelis and injured hundreds since the Israel-PLO peace agreement was signed in September 1993.
