Alexandra David-Néel (1868–1969) was a pioneering French-Belgian explorer, writer, and Buddhist scholar whose life defied the conventions of her time. Best known for her daring 1924 journey to Lhasa, Tibet—a city then closed to foreigners—she became the first Western woman to enter the sacred capital, disguised as a Tibetan beggar and accompanied by her adopted son, Lama Yongden .
Born in Paris, David-Néel led a multifaceted life as an opera singer, anarchist, and feminist before dedicating herself to the study of Eastern religions. Her spiritual pursuits led her to India and Sikkim, where she studied Buddhism intensively and formed a significant friendship with the 13th Dalai Lama, who encouraged her studies and spiritual practice .
David-Néel's extensive travels across Asia spanned over 14 years, during which she immersed herself in Tibetan culture and religious practices. Her experiences culminated in a series of influential writings, including "My Journey to Lhasa" (1927) and "With Mystics and Magicians in Tibet" (1929), which introduced Western audiences to Tibetan Buddhism and mystical practices .
Her works significantly influenced Western perceptions of Eastern spirituality and inspired figures of the Beat Generation, such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg . David-Néel's legacy endures as a testament to her extraordinary courage and her role in bridging Eastern and Western spiritual traditions.
