Shiva is also the great ascetic, abstaining from all forms of indulgence and pleasure, concentrating rather on meditation as a means to find perfect happiness.
The Thevaram denotes the first seven volumes of the Tirumurai, the twelve-volume collection of Śaiva devotional poetry. All seven volumes are dedicated to the works of the three most prominent Tamil poets of the 7th century, the Nayanars - Sambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar. The singing of Thevaram is continued as a hereditary practise in many Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. Dēvāram means garland of poems to the lord
Three stages have been identified in the evolution of Thevaram - first is the mark of Shiva as the supreme deity during the 7th - 9th century, the second involved Chola kings initiating the compilation of all the hymns and installing the images of the 3 saint poets during the 10th to 11th century and the last being the restructuring done by the pontiffs of the mathas who incorporated the hymns into Saiva Siddantha canon in the 13th century.
When Sundarar was to be married, it is said the Shiva, disguised as an old man, interrupted the process and claimed that he was pledged to serve him. Disbelief was rife, and Sundarar called him a madman, or a “Pithan”, denying he belongs to him. The ascetic proved his claim by a written manuscript and whisked Sundarar away from his own wedding. That man was Shiva himself. Upon realizing Shiva’s true form, Sundarar composed this Thevaram, lamenting continuously to Him, “How can I not be yours?”
சுந்தரமூர்த்தி நாயனார் தேவாரம்
சுந்தரமூர்த்தி நாயனார் என்பவர் சைவசமயத்தில் போற்றப்படும் சமயக்குரவர் நால்வரில் ஒருவரும், அறுபத்து மூன்று நாயன்மார்களில் ஒருவரும் ஆவார். இவர் புத்தூரில் சடங்கவி சிவாச்சாரியாரின் மகளைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ள இருந்தபோது, சிவபெருமான் கிழவனாகச் சென்று தடுத்தார். பின்பு, சுந்தரரின் பிறவி நோக்கம், 'சிவபெருமானைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடுவது' எனப் புரிய வைத்தார். இதனைத் தடுத்தாட்கொள்ளுதல் எனச் சைவர்கள் கூறுகிறார்கள். இவர், இறைவன் மீது, பல தலங்களுக்குச் சென்று பாடியுள்ளார். இப்பாடல்களைத் 'திருப்பாட்டு' என்று அழைக்கின்றனர். திருப்பாட்டினைச் 'சுந்தரர் தேவாரம்' என்றும் அழைப்பர். திருமணத்தினைத் தடுத்து, சுந்தரரை அழைத்துவந்த சிவபெருமானே, பரவையார், சங்கிலியார் என்ற பெண்களைத் திருமணம் செய்துவைத்தார்.

இவர் வாழ்ந்தது கி.பி. எட்டாம் நூற்றாண்டளவிலாகும்.[4] இவர் பாடிய தேவாரங்கள், 7-ஆம் திருமுறையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இவர் இயற்றிய திருத்தொண்டத்தொகை என்னும் நூலில், 60 சிவனடியார்கள் பற்றியும், 9 தொகை அடியார்கள் பற்றியும் குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன. இந்நூலின் துணை கொண்டே, சேக்கிழார், பெரியபுராணம் எனும் நூலை இயற்றினார். அதில் சுந்தரமூர்த்தி நாயனாரையும், அவரது பெற்றோரான சடையனார், இசை ஞானியார் ஆகிய மூவரையும் இணைத்து, சிவதொண்டர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையை 63 எனக் கையாண்டார்.
